Interactive graph experience
Check out a.cossu's Web page design contest…
What industry do you think your business is most related to?
Tell us a bit about who you are and the people you reach
We deal with the future and with influence analysis: by describing plausible future scenarios we let them disturb the present in order to choose the most suitable action plan to reach a target objective. Moreover we study the connections among groups of people in order to find out how information flow and where are located the most important power "hubs", where the concept of power could be different from case to case. We target mainly medium-large sized companies having a rich internal structure and caring very much about planning for the future.
The website will be composed by only 1 page (the homepage). The classic container-based approach (boxes) to build a website has made all of them look the same. The design requested in this context has to differ from this approach and so the designer (and the user, too) is free from the container constraint. The navigation experience should intrigue the user and the interaction with the content of the page should be intuitive and pleasant: soft zooms, small rotations and other types of view transformation are recommended. You are free to use any color, images, or any other "graphic boost" you want.
A graph is composed by a set of nodes connected by edges. In the typical 2D representation nodes are circles and edges are (uni/bi) directional arrows connecting two nodes. The corresponding 3D representation is straightforward. The homepage will be all about a graphical representation of a (relatively small) graph. The representation has to account for the fact that users will interact with it in some, predefined, ways (e.g.: by clicking on a node or by dragging an edge). Hence, the representation has to attract and entertain the user. Moreover after an explicit interaction (e.g.: user clicks on a node) some information should be displayed to the user (e.g.: what the node is about) in order to convey a small but accurate piece of knowledge. In addition, you have to design the environment in which the graph will be placed. The environment can vary from a very simple background to a more complicated combination of elements. The important aspect is that the graph has to be integrated with it in a seamless and pleasant way. As a side note: the graph is not meant to be static, even if sometimes it can be, but it will softly float around the environment. If this is useful to you, feel free to take it into consideration when designing the representation. The graph is expected to have around 25 nodes and 5 edges per node.
What to avoid
Do not use boxes, the view is organic and all-in-one. Do not use menus, of any kind.
In the attachments you will find an example of a small graph (white background) and an example of a larger and more appealing graph (black background).
