The elevator pitch: the board game Risk, in outer space, versus 5000 other people, for a year. We are programmers ... and we're nearing the end of an alpha. However, we need your design expertise to make it look good and easy for players to understand what they're looking at.
Beyond this, there are probably three other related projects seeking help building out other pages and navigation for the game. So, we would like to continue working with you after the contest.
What we need
- User experience design and aesthetic design for the Dashboard -- the main page after you log into the game. This would include the general "chrome" of the web-based game including the header and footer and logo. Additionally, you would design the placement and the way that information should be displayed in the dashboard.
- Eventually we'll use your design and turn it into HTML5, CSS3 and Bootstrap 3 classes along with custom CSS classes. Ideally, you have some idea of what Bootstrap / responsive-web design is and how feasible a design is to implement with Bootstrap.
- From an aesthetic perspective, we want fun, clean and simple. It's a simple game, like Risk. In fact, it doesn't have to be all serious ... it might be interesting if Mario Party was in outer-space. We're open to any design as long as it is cohesive.
- It should feel futuristic, but still feel like a board game to the extent that is possible in a web page.
- We would love ideas on how to incorporate creative ways to illustrate various things in the game. How do we display the strength of a squadron now that it has been in a few battles versus its original strength and size? How do we display how long until a squadron arrives at its destination? How do we display the relative values of planets (since some will yield more resources each hour than others). Any infographics that can be incorporated as visual cues would be VERY attractive to us.

You build squadrons, send them across solar systems to mine planets, or possibly battle to grab planets. After holding a planet for an hour, you are rewarded with the yield from that planet. You use the yield to either build more squadrons or bank points. At the end of every round (6 hours) the players with the most banked points "win that round" which improves their position in the leaderboards.
You can try it out ... however I'm not going to lie to you ... it's rough at the moment (and that's why we need your help). The functionality is coming together. We've paid absolutely no attention to aesthetic up to this point, focusing rather on functionality:

The focus for this project is the main Dashboard after you log in ... it is here in this console that you view all of the important information you need to play the game like the planets under your control, your squadrons and their current status, access to the map of the galaxy, messages that describe what's happened while you were away, your current resources, banked points, current round number, how much time until the round ends, your current rank, etc.
Solid information design is important here.

In addition to the Dashboard itself, there's the header, logo and footer area that needs some design work.
