The symbol needs to standalone. See the SparkFun logo attached. The red "flame" symbol stands alone, but the company name is prominent. I think that's a pretty good model, though the layout doesn't need to be exactly like that - the symbol can be larger than the Sparkfun example. I just mainly want to be able to easily separate the symbol from the logo name text.
If a dolphin is incorporated as the symbol, and seems likely it should be, just the suggestion of form is fine....a dorsal fin or tail, use your imagination. Suggestion via brush stroke is fine. So, rather than the entire dolphin form, a suggestion of form would potentially work. This is why I slid a little more towards subtle than obvious.
Logo needs to work in black-and-white and or grey scale as the symbol will be stamped on circuit boards which only have white silkscreen ink to deal with. That's why the Sparkfun flame symbol mentioned above works well for them. This is why I slid more towards simple than complex.
I think the contrast in the Sparkfun logo I uploaded works well.
Our products are digital technology, so don't be afraid to incorporate digital ideas into a biological symbol. In some ways this is wide open - I don't have a strong sense of how this would work or look, but want to leave it open to your imagination.
I could see an "artsy" brush on this or crisp clean line logo. I don't really know what I'm looking for exactly, so I'm willing to be surprised on the style question. Perhaps some of my other requests above will move this in a particular direction, I just don't know which yet.
Will ultimately want have the logo delivered in the following variations:
2) white on black
3) black on white
4) formats: EPS, AI, PNG with transparent background, and JPG for each of the color variations above
5) symbol only as well as symbol with logo text (as mentioned earlier one of the requirements was symbol would be able to standalone.)
6) As appropriate white on solid color (such as the blue matching the color logo).
