Floyd99 got their new logo design by running a design contest:
Community Contest: Create a logo for the revamped Charlotte Hornets!
Check out Floyd99's Logo design contest…
You may have heard the buzz: the Charlotte Bobcats, a professional NBA basketball team based in North Carolina, are going back to their city's roots. Starting in 2014, the team will change their name to the Hornets, previously used in Charlotte for 14 years (from 1988–2002) by the team that is now called the New Orleans Pelicans. With the name change comes new branding - and we thought it would be fun to see what our community can come up with for the Hornets 2.0! (The team's official new logo and brand will be introduced to the public December 21st.) *Note: this unofficial contest is being run by 99designs for fun only. But the prize is real!
Logo types to explore
It was recently revealed that the Charlotte Bobcats are changing up their name - bringing back the vintage "Hornets" moniker from the city's earlier basketball days with another team. We want our community to create a fresh new logo to represent the fresh new Hornets! For more details, check the blog post here: http://99designs.com/designer-blog/2013/12/12/community-contest-charlotte-hornets/ Quick history about Charlotte that could be useful when creating this logo: -Hornets are native to Charlotte, North Carolina. -Charlotte is the 2nd largest financial center in the United States with the nation's largest banks. -Charlotte is nicknamed the "Queen City." -Charlotte's second nickname, "The Hornet's Nest," dates back to the American Revolutionary War. A British commander occupied the city but was eventually driven out by hostile residents, prompting him to describe as Charlotte as "a hornet's nest of rebellion". Want to brush up on more history on Charlotte? This website gives you almost everything you need to know about Charlotte: http://www.charlottesgotalot.com/charlotte-history For this contest, anything goes, but we will be looking for a design that would work with current NBA logos: http://www.sportslogos.net/teams/list_by_league/6 Some teams have an actual mascot (Grizzlies, Pelicans, Bucs), while others have a reference to their geographic location (Nuggets, Warriors, Jazz). Some of them have some subtle references to their name (Rockets, Wizards, Suns). What we want to focus on with the Hornets is the idea of past and present! The team name has quite an interesting past, so one idea we have for the contest could be a retro theme. How can this team's history influence its new logo? At the same time, the team has evolved over the years - the new Charlotte Hornets are not the Hornets of 12+ years ago (they're literally a different organization!) So another idea is to modernize the classic look of this team. Put some solid thought into this, and be imaginative. The hornet mascot provides for unlimited creativity and we expect that to show in your designs! Show us what kinds of awesome different branding paths this team could take. It appears the Hornets intend to return to their infamous purple-and-teal color scheme, first introduced in 1988. Their secondary colors will be black, cool gray, and light blue. While this contest is specifically for a logo, feel free to get creative in showing how it could be used on jerseys, with its primary and alternate colors, or even how your design would look on the team's new basketball courts! Let's remodel this Hornets' Nest. We will be providing plenty of written feedback throughout this contest. Please don't hesitate to ask any questions in the public section of the comments!
