Help Diversion Divers with a new illustration or graphics

My wife and I are independent contractor SCUBA instructors in the Pacific Northwest. We teach certifications from beginner all the way through Divemaster. Our company derives its name from the name of our boat, "Diversion".
What's your vision?
We are looking for a logo or design that can be applied to an article of clothing, (hats, tshirts, jackets) that incorporates two “D”s (for Diversion Divers), a water theme, and some kind of tentacled creature like the graphic attached. I have tried unsuccessfully to create a logo with these features like interlocking Ds and tentacles, and have failed miserably. Ideally it shouldn’t be too complex in order to allow for embroidery options, but please don’t let that be a limiting factor. Color palette should be somewhat subdued; no neon or pastels. Teal to deep water green and blue, greys and blacks for the creature. I have visualized everything from very modern interpretations to something that looks like it came off a 16th or 17th century nautical chart. We are leaning towards the antique look, but are open to suggestions.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions! James@diversiondivers.com
