What's your vision?
I want a poster (possibly block-print looking?) which depicts a great lighthouse with a multi-colored, tiled roof sticking up from from a cliff. Light should shine from the towers top in yellow - more about colors in 'anything else' to communicate to designers. Wrapped about the base is a great tentacled sea creature, with many eel-like eyes and mouths climbing from the sea and up the tower. It should appear to be much larger then the cliff - most of the sea likely should be its hideous body rising from the 'surf'. Somewhere, either hanging from an 'edge' of the tower-like lighthouse or held aloft in a tentacle should be a 'hanged man' in the style of the rider-waite tarot deck. *Update - Some new thoughts for you all 3/11/2017 - 1) The Monster - Many of you have gone right to the squid/octopus. I understand why you have done this, but it isn't quite right. Imagine a monster born of your subconscious (and your fellows subconsciouses) sliding beneath the surf. This creature grants you what you Want, and in so doing destroys you. While such a creature may have elements of sea creatures within it, surely it would not take a shape totally recognisable to us? Shoot to be more strange and alien in it's design. Additionally, remember that the thing has intelligence - it's not stupid. The Lighthouse - Avoid modern lighthouses - think more Mediterranean, tile roofs, and older (classical - renaissance). Additionally, the cliff the lighthouse juts out on is part of a greater city - it does not stand alone. You may choose to leave the lighthouse 'alone' in the image but make sure it is a design choice - one you have made for a reason. Horror Abstraction - Abstraction is good, particularly if it is symbolic or slightly horrifying. Trust me when I say that a little weirdness will take you very far with me ;). Would be great if... A) You can fit in references to Gold Coins, as symbols of avarice and guilt, somewhere in the design. B) You can fit in references to murder, particulary murder of the self, somewhere in the design. I think the hanged man may cover this though. The only words on the poster should read "The Song in the Deep".
General Design - I do not need a rich illustration that looks too 'real' - this is largely a symbolic piece depicting the subconscious 'wants' conflicting with what is healthy and/or wise. The hanged man is a former victim of this 'subconscious' sea monster. As such, 'block print' or cutout style design is totally acceptable - even preferable. I am not looking for a 'realistic' work that looks as if it was created by a late 1800's master. Abstraction is fine, and encouraged. Colors - Stark contrast between elements (or assets) is probably best, but I am open minded here. I will likely print a few versions of this in which I will have gold printed over any yellow sections, or coins, or etc... if it would look appropriate. May want to keep that in mind. Perspective - I wouldn't mind at all if the perspective was 'staring down' at the tower from a not quite bird's eye view - I am open minded about this however. What I do NOT want is: a lone tower with a squid in the middle of an otherwise undetailed scene. I may want a few more of these done in this style at some point, so doing a good job could land you working on some pretty cool stuff! Feel free to ask questions - I love to talk about this junk.
