We are seeking an illustrated pair of Gladiator characters along with procedural customizations for our Alpha pre-release version of the web based game.
More specifically, we are seeking one Male, and one Female gladiator base character design, designed in similar style, along with a collection of various faces, hairstyles, armor types, shields, and weapons appropriate to the theme, which can be layered on-top of the character "paper-doll" style to create a custom character for in-game players. No animation of the character is required. (note: the layering of these additional details can be done in the standard layered design file provided, no additional work or coding is required by the designer)
We are asking for one base Male, and Female character plus at a minimum, the following specific customizations (which should be "universal" between the male/female designs, OR male/female specific versions provided, but these minimum counts reflect the minimum per gender in that case):
- 4x eye designs
- 4x mouth designs
- 4x nose designs
- 4x battle scars
- 3x hairstyles (no helmet)
- 3x helmets (no hairstyle required)
- 3x different shields
- 3x different armor designs (in the case of armor, male/female variants are allowed as it provides a bit more artistic freedom)
- 10x different weapons (appropriate for gladiator theme)
Additional customization option layers are both welcome and encouraged.
All designs (including the base character) should have small aspects of a distinct color (to be used for color keying, and customizing the "theme" color of the character) for example, the boss on a shield, or the detailing on a sword, and details in the armor, etc. This color should be high contrast, and distinct from the rest of the character design, so that we can use a software filter to replace this color with whichever color the player has chosen as their custom color theme.
A cartoon style, not attempting to be too "realistic" would be preferred. But not too "goofy", still able to be taken seriously. We are seeking a visually distinct style. More realistic styles will also be considered, we are fairly open (for example, Anime type, or Comic Book Hero style art as well).
For the current iteration this design will be used in a static "Status" page for each Gladiator, which is designed a bit like a playing card, and has their statistics surrounding the image of the gladiator. It may also be used in the information page for battles to show who fought in each battle. No animation is required for the current Alpha release of the game, however in our future final release we will be developing additional features, and will require additional design work. We are both willing and eager to continue working with the selected artist on the upcoming work as well.
The card layout means the image for the warrior must be vertical orientation to look right (in otherwords should have a "portrait" aspect ratio). Specifically the "bounding box" for the entire image should fit within a range from 1.5:1 to 2:1 aspect ratio (ratio expressed height:width)
A full height design showing the entire Gladiator is expected, and as it is a static display it should be in a somewhat compelling or dynamic pose.
The pose for the male and female designs does not need to align, however due to the "paper doll" aspect, it will need to line up enough that interchangeable parts will line up still (or versions aligned to each gender model will need to be provided).
*Rough concept sketches are encouraged so we can provide feedback as soon as possible!*
