Skins of Lightning
P. J. Christman
When his dad died prematurely of a heart attack, Paul (P. J.) Christman began to run. This led him eventually to publish and edit Running Stats, a periodical of long-distance running. His careers include a stint in San Francisco international banking, mailman to video tape editor at NBC Burbank, substitute teaching, and Santa Fe elementary school librarian. He is a voracious reader and has written ten novels. His 1981 novel predicting a sub-two-hour marathon, The Purple Runner, is considered a cult book. He is a member of the Colorado Running and Illinois Striders Halls of Fame. Christman resides in Santa Fe, New Mexico
A substitute teacher and former runner inspires his sixth-grade class of underprivileged students in Santa Fe. He starts girls’ and boys’ cross-country teams to develop motivation and discipline that will apply to the classroom. Readers will discover a feel-good ending in a climactic middle-school race.
