What's the book about?
The book itself is a one-sided dialogue of correspondence. We have a series of letters from a mentor to his mentee about legal practice.
Through those letters we see the developing career of the mentee from law school through to retirement.
The mentor ("Uncle Andrew") is an old school lawyer with old fashioned views.
His mentee (Thomas) is a law student (progressing to a senior lawyer through the course of the book) with a long family history of legal practice, but isn't entirely sure that legal practice is for him in the long term.
Uncle Andrew tries to instruct Thomas through the core skills of practice - professional growth, marketing and networking, business skills, and communication.
The relationship is a little tense at times. Thomas doesn't always take the advice on board, and Andrew can find this frustrating.
