We invite you to submit rough sketches and ideas so that we can let you know early in the process whether your ideas are where we would like to go with this cover design. That will save you time and efforts.
Full-color, full wrap, 8.5" x 11" trim size, paperback book cover for the Adventure Quest Game Book. The final design needs to meet the bleed, trim, and spine measurement guidelines of on-demand self-publishing for 210 pages - the spine width should be 0.473".
Final product must be Photoshop or InDesign (include all layers), with additional copy files in pdf format.
We are not set on font, but up until now we've used Grail Light for most headers, Bembo for body text, and for
the logo, the font is Grail Light with the capitalized letters being
Black Chancery. Please see the attached Adventure Quest
logo. However, I'd like to change the look of the "Adventure Quest" word to maybe all Black Chancery, or all of one other font that communicates our company. I'm not a fan of the dual font in the same word look, anymore. Also, for the book cover, it may look good to have Black Chancery for "Adventure Quest", but Grail Light for "The Live-Action Roleplaying Game". But please experiment with fonts, and give me suggestions of fonts you think express our company. Thanks! Hopefully you can find free versions of them and we can
just re-link the font in InDesign or Photoshop or modify it.
We have shared a link to a public folder on our Dropbox filled with images that can be used (mostly from artist Tod Wills) (https://www.dropbox.com/sh/dt2scbtj…pQXpGyEHyY), but the overall design needs to POP, and sell the book. We feel that few if any images are actually needed for this project.
Stock images: Please only use stock images that we could purchase the exclusive rights to use the image on any kind of a product (allowing the artist to retain rights to selling artwork as long as it is not on a product). I know making sure this is the case takes a little more investigation, but it helps us by making sure we don't approve an image initially and then have to eliminate it down the road because of a rights issue.
We need to find a balance in the art and design between kid-friendly, family-friendly, and exciting enough to appeal to teenagers. Definitely needs to be family-friendly so parents will purchase the book for their kids. But also needs to potentially express courage, valor, and exciting action, to attract the kids and teens. We don't want anything so combative, grisly, or "dark" that it looks like the Dungeons and Dragons RPG or Pathfinder RPG, and definitely no vampires or werewolves on the cover.
We had a full-cover color artwork designed for this book (centaur, racoon-person, and elf wizard on cover, with goblins sneaking up on back cover). However, we are now viewing that art as appealing to an audience that is younger than what we want to appeal to. Yes, it is kid and family friendly, but it probably does not appeal to the teenagers. We encourage creative new ideas that we haven't thought of before, and creative use of our artwork and your own artwork/design. To that end, we are uploading a wide variety of our artwork. Feel free to use parts of these in whatever creative way you come up with.
We definitely want the design to be exciting, engaging, and inspiring. It has to make a viewer want to pick up the book.
A few potential ideas (take them or leave them):
a. perhaps the cover artwork could be an action-packed battle scene, or one or more heroic characters.
b. Map on parchment as background, action figure or figures as foreground.
c. leather bound tome - perhaps the central image of the picture on front cover is isolated from the background, blown up, and surrounded by a more "leather-bound tome" feel to the cover design, stamped/embossed in the mahogany or red-brown leather is the name of the book (maybe burned in or with crackling gold paint). Or the central image is paint on cloth, stitched into the leather. Could use an exciting figure for this, such as the pic below "tuskephant warrior and cheetahlord martialist melee.tif".
d) Something very simple - almost plain - but striking. A bright band of lightning on a starlit sky. Or perhaps a pure white book with just our logo done in some interesting way.
Also, the "Adventure Quest" logo on the book cover is not set in stone - that could also be modified or redesigned, if you are inspired to do that as a part of this contest.
Front Cover text:
The Live-Action Roleplaying Game
(these two lines could be together, one above the other, or the second line could be at the bottom of the front cover).
(We also may want our logo on the front cover - the archway with the boy holding the sword up).
Back Cover Text:
